About the Champagne Classic

The Champagne Classic is a Group 2 set weights race for two year olds, held each year at Doomben Racecourse in Brisbane. This event is held over a distance of 1200 metres and worth $175,000 in prize money. The Champagne Classic takes place each May on Doomben Cup Day, one of the biggest days of racing on the Queensland calendar.

The Champagne Classic is held alongside six other Group races on Doomben Cup Day, including the Group 1 Doomben Cup, Doomben Roses, BRC Sprint, Lady Of The Turf Stakes, and Fred Best Classic. This race has been won by a number of classy sprinters over the years, including names like Gold Edition in 2006, Lovely Jubly in 2002, Staging in 1997, Flavour in 1996, and Chief De Beers in 1994.

The Champagne Classic is often a lead up race to the Group 2 Sires Produce Stakes, and a number of horses have won this double over the years. Pressday was the last horses to manage this feat in 2010, also winning the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes over a distance of 1600 metres. Impulsive Dream ran a close second in the Sires Produce Stakes in 2009 after coming third in the Champagne Classic.

Some horses from this event may also go on to race in the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes, which is run over a distance of 1400 metres at Rosehill Racecourse in August. While reliable lead up races for the Champagne Classic can be hard to come by, 2012 winner Sizzling won the Listed Ken Russell Stakes over 1200 metres on the Gold Coast before winning this event.

The Champagne Classic has been run since 1982, although it has changed names a few times over the years. This event has also been known as the BATC Coca Cola Bottlers’ Classic, BTC Moet And Chandon Classic, and BTC Coca Cola Classic. The Champagne Stakes became a Group 3 race in 1987 and a Group 2 race recently in 2006.
